Puttu and Kadala Curry



Puttu and Kadala Curry

One of the Authentic kerala Breakfast is puttu and Kadala. It is made out
of rice flour and is cylindrical in shape .Puttu is made with the help of a Puttu maker. Puttu maker is a steamer which is cylindrical in shape. These are
available in the Indian stores. You can also use Idli molds if u
don't have the puttu maker.But the shape may not be the same as the puttu
made with the puttu maker.

Puttu

Ingredients:
2 cups ready made puttu podi[white or brown]
1-1 1/4 cups water
salt to taste

Fresh coconut 1 cup

Method:

In a big vessel add the puttu powder and water and salt. Mix well. Take
a small amount of the batter and squeeze it in your hand if it is holding
together and forming a shape that means your batter is the right
consistency.

Now add a fistful of grated coconut in the puttu maker and then add
the rice flour till half, then add another handful of coconut. This is
done till you reach the top of the cylindrical shape.Close the lid and
steam for couple of miniutes[6-7miniutes].
Serves 4-5

Kadala Curry

Black Chana -3/4cups

To make a paste

Fresh coconut -1/2 cups
coriander seeds -2tbs
redchillies -3-4
water enough to make a smooth paste

onion -1 small
ginger -1"in piece thinly sliced
green chillies -2
curryleaves -8-10
coconut oil -2tbs
mustard seeds -1tsp
Redchillies -2
Method:
Soak black chana overnight.Pressure cook for 3-4 whistles.set aside.

In a pan Roast the coconut,coriander and redchillies until coconut
turns light golden brown. Let it cool. In a blender grind it into smooth paste with water.

In another pan add oil,mustard seeds ,redchillies and let it splutter. Add the chopped onion,greenchillies and ginger. Cook until the onion is translucent.Now add the paste and let it boil for 5 miniutes. Add the cooked chana and curry leaves and mix well.Bring the curry to boil. If the curry is too thick add alittle bit more water.

Enjoy with cup of tea,Puttu,pazham,pappadam .
